At the grocery store, beware of foods in every aisle that are waiting to undermine your healthful shopping trip.

Here are a few tips to help you save food dollars with heart-healthful foods:

•  Add your own margarine or sauces to vegetables. Frozen prepared vegetables with sauce or butter added or in boil-in-bag pouches cost more and contain saturated fat.
•  Use soft or liquid margarine instead of butter for spreading or cooking. Look for those with liquid vegetable oil as the first ingredient.
•  Most fats and oils need to be protected from air, heat and light. Keep oils in the refrigerator for long-term storage.
•  Make your salad dressing from various herbs, oil and vinegar.
