At the grocery store, beware of foods in every aisle that are waiting to undermine your healthful shopping trip.

Here are a few tips to help you save food dollars with heart-healthful foods:

•  Limit your use of pickles, relishes, olives, etc. These high-cost items are high in sodium.
•  Buy fruit juices instead of fruit drinks, which may be mainly water, sugar and flavorings with vitamins added.
•  Choose juices high in Vitamin C such as orange, grapefruit and tomato juice.
•  Fruit juice and tomato juice are better nutritional buys than soft drinks or alcoholic beverages.
•  Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables to eat as "finger-food" snacks and desserts.
•  Look for fat-free or low-fat and low-sodium varieties of crackers, snack chips, cookies and cakes.
•  Make your own desserts with fat-free, ½% fat or 1% fat milk, unsaturated oil and egg whites or egg substitutes.
