At the grocery store, beware of foods in every aisle that are waiting to undermine your healthful shopping trip.

Here are a few tips to help you save food dollars with heart-healthful foods:

•  Choose grapefruit and oranges heavy for their size. They have more juice.
•  If you need to avoid sugar, look for regular brands of fruit and juice that aren't sweetened. Do the same to find canned and frozen vegetables without salt.
•  Canned tomato chunks and vegetable pieces are better buys than fancier grades for soups and stews.
•  Sliced, cut or chopped frozen or canned vegetables usually cost less than whole ones.
•  Check packaged produce carefully for quality.
•  Pass up wilted vegetables and overripe fruit, even if they cost less.
•  If lettuce is sold by the head, buy the heaviest.
•  Try other greens for salads. Look for endive, escarole, spinach and cabbage. Buy those that cost the least per pound.
•  Pre-cut coleslaw, cabbage or salad mixtures are costly.
•  Individually frozen vegetables in large plastic bags usually cost less per serving than small packages.
